Cortisol and androgens are synthesised from cholesterol that is mainly derived from circulating cholesterol esters, although intracellular cholesterol biosynthesis also occurs (Fig. 7.6). Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is an important source of cholesterol, particularly during ACTH stimulation.
